Good morning golfers,

I hope that you all managed to tie yourself down over the weekend with the crazy winds and gusts around! Although the weather might be cold, wet and windy there is light at the end of the tunnel. Mid February only means that spring, warmer weather, the grass growing and lighter evenings are just around the corner.

We have some great information for you this week and some great opportunities to take advantage of. Personally I am very excited about our new member of staff starting next Tuesday. Ollie will be a great addition to our team and I am hoping that you will all pop in to meet and greet over the forthcoming weeks. I know I say it often but to have another PGA professional with us at Girton is amazing, all with different skills sets ready to drive Girton forward.

Inside the Studio

It's still amazing to me how much work we can do to golfers putting stroke and how little time people spend looking at and working on the part of the game that they use most. Don't get me wrong for the average club golfer distance and consistency of strike are massive for improving scores but the ability to even just reduce 3 putts of hole out from 5 feet is massive.

Sarah PuttingHere is Sarah Peek Vout, a long time lesson of mine working on some changes she made last week with the help of SAM Putt Lab and GASP Lab. We custom fitted Sarah's putter to improve eye alignment, posture, and strike pattern as well as changing her launch angle. Sounds a was done with a posture change and putter fit. Improving your game

How to Play the 8th Hole - It's not always about the flag

So at Girton we have 5 Par3's. This means that playing them well can have a dramatic impact on your score. The 8th hole, one of the trickier ones on the course, has a green that tempt and tease you into attacking but yet leave you with some smelly looking chips and pitches.

Green in ZonesPersonally when I look at this green I divide it into 4 quadrants.

I look at the green and decide which area if I was playing every week would I want to leave myself, regardless of the flag position.

I use a traffic light system to understand the best place to leave myself and then chose my target line and club choice based on the weather.

Quadrant Key:
Red: No go area. Club choice to Avoid this area even if the flag is there.
Amber: Choose carefully. It could lend itself to a horrible chip.
Green: Best Place to be regardless of the flag position. Biggest area, easiest chip if you miss the green.

The best place for me is always front left. It leaves me with a nice chip if I am short and easier bunker shot if I am a fraction left of the green, whereas and thing right can leave tricky awkward up and downs. Just try and divide your green up, to see if it changes you focus.
