Good morning,

I know what you're thinking, "I thought the golf season started with the Masters?" Well, I am with you there, but with the rain and weather we have had the last week, who knows when spring will arrive?

On the plus side we in the professional shop are ploughing forward with some great plans and I personally enjoyed a trip to The Belfry this week for more professional development that I look forward to sharing with you in this newsletter, along with what you can take advantage of over the next few weeks.

I am also looking forward to my family holiday of this year, going away with my wife and now one year old son (that went quick), so I will be leaving Ollie in charge of all shop activity and Dean in charge of all teaching activity. While I am away, feel free to get to know these guys better.

What are your gains?

On Monday I visited the Belfry and some CPD from some great coaches including Mark Day, Bio-mechanist Mark Bull, Professor David Collins and Tour Putting Coach John Graham.

Apart from some great individual information from each of these top coaches and academics, for me there was a common theme with some questions that we as coaches should be placing on students and you as golfers should be thinking about. So here are my four questions for you this week, and I await your answers and thoughts:

  • What do I NEED in my game to reach my goals?
  • Do you confuse OUGHT to, with what you need?
  • Do I need to remove my weaknesses or create super strengths?
  • Do you seek the expert for the answers, or do you want help discovering them for YOU?

If you have a little think about these questions and want to discuss your answers further I think the mark of a great coaching relationship starts with a chat.

Are you wasting your money?

We have had a number of golfers in the last few weeks come in the shop looking for new equipment to help their golf game. If your considering buying new equipment then I have a few tips to make sure you don't waste money, get more bang for your buck and see the investment pay off:

  1. Book a custom fitting session - No club should be bought in this era, that has not been measured and made bespoke for you. There is no extra cost so it's worth spending the time with a PGA Professional or Club Fitter to get measured advice.
  2. Don't be brand loyal - When club fitting, the one thing we want from a customer is a blank piece of paper, no brand specific ideas, just a chance to fit the player with the best possible option avaialble to them regardless of brand.
  3. Set your budget - Know how much you want to spend and be realistic. A good fitter uses the information to guide their decision making and not to get the highest price driver in their hand, there is nothing worse than finding a driver that performs great only to find the guy didn't want to spend that much. Be realistic and be fair to the fitter.
  4. Less is more - Fitting your clubs isn't just about the measurements of shaft, lie and length but what the bag consists of. For most golfers they carry too many clubs especially in that top end. A good fitter will organise the bag to make sure you don't have too many and more importantly have the right options.
  5. Every club counts - We want you to get game enhancing clubs then you need to make sure EVERY club is bespoke to you, wedge fitting for lie, length, bounce, grind. Putter fitting for style, length, grip, loft, driver fitting for loft, shaft flex, torque, butt or tip stiffness, head composition and so on...

Short Game and Putting Master Classes

I hope you enjoyed another amazing Masters and watching some of the best players in the world perform on one of the most spectacular golf courses has your juices flowing to get out and play.

What is always evident at Augusta is how short game, bunker play, pitching and chipping as well as putting is vital for good scoring. You may not play Augusta every week but this is the same for your game, and that is why we have put on a Short Game Series for you including Short Game and Putting Masterclasses.

These will run as a two hour group sessions, with a maximum of eight people per group. Dates are as follows:

Short Game Masterclass

  • Monday, 25 April (2pm - 4pm)
  • Monday, 9 May (10am - 12pm)

Putting Masterclass

  • Wednesday, 4 May (12pm - 2pm)

The cost of each Masterclass is £19.99, however if you want to experience both you will save £5 (£35 for both sessions).
