Greetings from Alan Fletcher
Girton Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Apart from the snow and the rain, the golf on the TV has been great watching, Tiger shooting his worst round as a professional, with what can only be described as the wedge yips, and Rory winning in Dubai. What is great is that being both Nike players you got to see the New Vapor Driver in play by both players and putting it to good use with Tiger Leading the Driving stats by 15 yards and Rory doing his usual and smashing it miles!

If you want to test their Driver then pop in store. Being one of the only fitting accounts in the region, we have the added bonus of having a range of shafts and flex to fit you to. This is one of the most popular drivers out there!

Enough on Long driving, and although it is a key, the survey I put out last week has really started to produce some interesting results, it seems that more than 75% of those that replied to the survey 3 putt more than 3 times per round! With 62% suggesting that they have between 34-40 putts per round!

This is where I NEED TO STOP YOU! Can we please stop thinking 36 putts per round is good! It's not, and the reason it is not is that you probably don't hit 18 greens in regulation.

We are very good as golfers at listening to great anecdotes like "2 putt every green" or " I should hole every putt from 6 foot". Well I am here to controversially tell you it's wrong.

I was fortunate to find this out for myself last week when competing at Royal Worlington. I can honestly say my game is in a great place currently from tee to green getting ready for the season. The putter however, has gone cold, and rather than moan about how poor the greens are, how bad my stroke is blah blah blah, I am taking action and working on my putting and changing my putter to something that is going to suit my changed putting style! We all have to do it

Here is why Rory Mcilroy (best player in the world) is averaging 67 shots per round this year, with 29.38 putts per round and 86% of greens in regulation. By greens in regulation I mean he hits a par 4 in 2, par 5 in 3 and par 3 in 1! Work out how many Greens in regulation you hit.

If it less than 50% that you should be aiming to get between 25-30 putts around. WHY? Well because your generally going to be chipping on more and hopefully having your first putt closer than those people that have more greens.

Putting is the one area in golf that has no distance constraints or need for power so we can all be as good as each other. In putting learn to do 3 things great.

1. Control Speed
2. Read the green and aim
3. Start the ball on your line

Keep an eye out in future newsletters for an amazing putting package offer from our Teaching team for February and March.

Here is a word from Girton PGA Teaching Professional Tim Button

Putter fitting is not just for professional golfers. Having your putter fitted to match your build and unique swing stroke can improve your putting stats. Off-the-shelf putters are mass produced on the principle of one-size fits all.

The putter should be the correct length to suit your personal height and physique. At the correct lie angle to suit you. The correct loft, to suit your stroke and the greens you putt on. You should never have a static putter fitting, it should always be fitted dynamically as this is in real time and mirrors what you would expect out on the golf course.

Considerations in design. Should it be toe weighted or face balanced, or off-set? This means whether the shaft of the putter should be in front of the face of the putter or anywhere to just behind the putter face.

Get these wrong and this can make a considerable difference to aim and putter face square at impact.

Our Professional Team Expands….

At Girton in the last 2 years since I started, I feel we have really worked towards building a pro shop team and coaching team that is to rival any professional staff and any club in the country.

Those of you that know me know that I like to keep pushing myself, keep improving what we do and improving the service and offering to our members and guests, so we have selected to recruit a new PGA Professional.

Dean Saunders will be joining us at the end of February and will bring a huge amount of energy, passion and excitement to our dynamic team. Dean will be working alongside Ryan and I in the shop and as fully qualified PGA professional will be ready to help and assist you with any problems to help your game.

I have also tasked Dean in building our Ladies coaching offering, to improve our ladies beginners, lady members and lady golfers group, individual classes along with arranging open days, ladies social nights and many more activities throughout the year. He is not a bad looking guy either ladies which helps!

Dean will also be looking to help our senior golfers with regular clinics starting in March for some social relaxed coaching to improve your game on a regular basis. I know some of you will know Dean from his days at Longstanton Range. He will be starting with us on the 21st February officially, but you may see Dean around before that getting into the swing of things

Please feel free to pop in the shop or stop Dean to welcome him.

Ryan Enters PGA East Region Tour School

Ryan's playing season is really heating up and with the new 2015 Diary for the PGA East Region announced, our plans for Ryan's tournament schedule start to become organised.

Ryan will be competing at the Order of Merit Qualifying school at the end of March at Essendon Golf Club with the aim to enter and play in all the Order of merit events this year.

After getting his Driver sorted for the forthcoming season and getting fitted with the NEW Titleist 915 Ryan has added 15 yards of length from the tee which when competing at any standard is a huge plus. See even us Pros are looking for a bit extra!

For sponsorship and support opportunities for Ryan's season please contact me here for details or speak to Ryan in store.
